The Story
Jeff Redd is a New York-born R&B; singer, songwriter, record producer and music executive whose career connects the rise of new jack swing with the executive development of the next generation of soul artists. Raised in Mount Vernon, New York, he began singing professionally in the mid-1980s, including an early period with The Sophisticated Gents. His live ability caught the attention of Uptown Records founder Andre Harrell, leading to a recording agreement with Uptown/MCA.
Redd’s 1990 debut album, A Quiet Storm, placed his commanding baritone and romantic delivery over the polished swing of the era. The project included “I Found Lovin’,” “Love High,” “What Goes Around, Comes Around,” and “Come and Get Your Lovin’.” “I Found Lovin’” reached No. 19 on Billboard’s R&B; chart, while “Love High” reached No. 16 and “What Goes Around, Comes Around” reached No. 53. The album itself reached No. 40 on the U.S. R&B; albums chart.
His soundtrack contribution “You Called and Told Me,” released in connection with the 1991 film Strictly Business, became another defining Jeff Redd record. Beyond his own recordings, Redd played an important early role in Mary J. Blige’s career: after hearing her demo, he brought it to Uptown Records, helping set in motion her signing and emergence as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.
Redd later recorded the album Down Low for EMI America. The project was caught in a corporate shutdown of the label’s Black music operation and received only limited circulation at the time. In 2024, Down Low received an official digital release through Capitol Records, allowing the long-shelved chapter of his catalog to reach streaming audiences.
As an A&R; executive at MCA Records, Redd worked within the careers of established and developing artists, with public credits and career accounts connecting him to projects involving K-Ci & JoJo, Regina Belle, Salt-N-Pepa and others. He also contributed to soundtrack-related work connected with films including How Stella Got Her Groove Back, The Hurricane and Eve’s Bayou.
Following MCA’s closure, he founded the independent imprint Sol Real Records, LLC. Through the label, he has continued developing artists and releasing music, including the 2007 compilation Jeff Redd Presents… The Essence of Soul. His career now stands at the intersection of legacy artistry, artist development, entrepreneurship and community service.
